How to Design a Kitchen

By Baron Austin at 2010-12-25 00:16:52
Functionality is very important, but don't overlook the overall "look and feel" of the space. The functionality will determine whether or not you like your kitchen, but the kitchen design will determine if you "love" your kitchen. And who doesn't want to LOVE what some consider the most important room in the house?

In designing a kitchen, you have to consider the man hours that will be spent in construction. If you are engaging the services of a contractor, most laborers will be charging you with hourly rates while others will cost you fixed rates. Do some cost-benefit analysis by determining the number of hours or days required for the work to be completed.

Designing a customized cabinetry is not a difficult task, if you are sure of what you are doing. You can look around and browse the Internet for design options but the most important point that needs to be taken care off is the steps of manufacturing the cabinets. The first and foremost task would be to determine the size of storage that you would want. Storage units can be of every size depending on one's needs.

Assuming that remodeling isn't required, the next step will be to identify the decorating style. It's smart to consult with the whole family at this point before deciding unilaterally on a kitchen decor. That's because a kitchen is one of those communal rooms in the home in which everyone feels he or she has a stake. It doesn't matter what the final style turns out to be, as long as everyone involved can feel reasonably comfortable with it. However once the style is chosen, great care should be taken throughout the project to make sure all decorating decisions fit within the style.

When you understand what kind of kitchen you wish to have you should design the work region. This is going to include the sink, stove, and refrigerator. Decide where the best places to place them are and how easily traffic will move when they are placed here. Change things when you want to.

Do use the working Triangle. This is a method that allows you to place your kitchen equipment (cooker, fridge, sink, worktops) so that you can reach each item or perform activities within a short run of each other so that you do not have to spend half your time walking back and forth unnecessarily. (Especially useful when designing a large kitchen.)

It is not uncommon today to find contemporary kitchens that employ two ovens, one on top of the other, with a warming drawer on the bottom. These double-ovens can be extremely useful, especially if one is planning a large dinner for a crowd. Always go with the latest technology when choosing your oven, as it will likely get more use than any appliance in the kitchen and thus must have the ability to withstand the test of time.

When drawing out the new design think about how many people may be using the room on a daily basis. If you have big parties many times throughout the year than take this into consider. For ideas you can always research the distinct styles that people have used in their house.
